The Other Side of Nature

(Day
One of Eastern Ontario's Ice Storm, 1998)

The furious side of nature turned,
relentless on our trees;
Each branch and twig encased in ice
was torturous weight for these.
The icicles added to the weight;
it seemed the trees did weep.
With unbearable sadness, they screamed their pain,
as they crashed into a heap.
How anything so beautiful
could cause such devastation;
This side of mother nature is
beyond our comprehension.
Memories will linger,
and a photograph or two,
Of trees when strong and beautiful
and loved by me and you.

Room For One More

A red cardinal perched on the wounded tree;
the branches were on the ground.
He seemed to know much better than we
that his home could not be found.
Some evergreens had weathered the storm,
home for many dozens
That must have beckoned, for he flew on in,
sharing shelter with feathered cousins.

Maestros

Nature is our teacher; we only need to look.
Her lessons are non-ending, unlike those in a book.
Sometimes we miss the beauty that is given us for joy;
Then Mother Nature turns around and does her wrath employ.
We give our full attention to the things we do not like,
And promise if they go away we'll honour things we like.
Countless colours paint each day and wonder fills the night;
There is only music can compare to Mother Nature's might.
