Farewell Summer

I look back on this summer
as it says its last farewell;
It's potpourri will not be missed -
the stories it did tell.

Floods, fires, and hurricanes,
cold, then humid and hot;
Some say summer never came
but Nature just stirred the pot!

I know things always can be worse
and to those who do not know -
There was a "summer of no summer"
and there I would not want to go.

It was the summer of 1816 -
snow fell in the middle of June;
It stayed until the following year -
now how would we dance to that tune?

Named "Eighteen hundred and froze to death" -
was about the size of it.
I read all this in "FAMILIES" magazine
and much more - 'twould give you a fit!

Our ancestors new what tough living was
and thanks to them we are here;
We are spoiled! We want things our way,
but we had some good times this year.

Farewell Summer! We'll look to next year
to plant and garden and play.
Thanks for the memories we have stored from this year
and thanks for each summer's day.
